Christmas is a wonderful time of year, it’s the time of year that everyone anxiously waits for and once it hear, goes by so fast that in the blink of an eye, it can be over with. With all the shopping, wrapping up presents, decking the halls and writing up Christmas cards, your pet might be feeling left out and confused by what is going on and on top of this, curiosity over the large tree in the living room can take hold of them.

How can you go about Christmas with your furry pet and not make them feel left out? Keeping them safe is the number one propriety and as you start to drag out that box of decorations, try to think about the trouble that can happen if your cat thinks the tree is a new toy or the dog is chewing up the plastic snowman. Having pets around the holidays can be rather stressful and you can worry if things will be okay but fear not! Here are the things you should think about when decking the halls.

They don’t understand what’s going on

Unless you’ve done this before, they probably sit there and watch as you bring things out and place them around the house, not having a clue what is going on. As silly as it sounds, try talking to them as you get ready or put the tree up and explain to them what’s going on and this should at least calm them down for awhile, especially if you pet them and give them a hug.

Pets + lit candle = dangerous!

We all love candles, they smell great and help us unwind around the holidays but make sure that you are extra careful just where you place those candles or trouble could be on the way.

Kitty is in the tree again!

Cats love to climb, it’s a known fact that their claws are designed just for climbing but getting down is the hard part. To your cat, a Christmas Tree looks much more like a jungle gym but there are ways to keep your cat away. In Cat Fancy, one person suggests pepper, sprinkle around the tree and the cat will take one whiff, sneeze and take off in the other directions. I’ve heard so many different things about what to use and now that I have a kitten that will be around the tree, I have to come up with this solution as well. Ssscat is what I’m thinking about buying, it’s a small spray that senses when the cat is around and startles them with a harmless, scentless, non-flammable spray hits them. Next year when I have more experience with this, I’ll suggest more. Right now, stick to trying out different scents that will hopefully make your cat turn away and learn that tree alone.

Baby, it’s cold out there

I understand having outdoor pets and even though they have fur, it’s a good idea to have a covered area [like dog house or a mini cat condo] for your pet to find shelter during the elements. Blankets are a great too. Remember that it gets really cold outside and you need to check to make sure that their water didn’t freeze over, often too, depending on how cold it is where you are. Never leave a pet inside of a car, it will become a freezer in a matter of minutes and in most states [or so I heard], a person has the right to break a window to save a pet inside, which could be dying.

Santa Paws?

Let’s face it, most of us love to dress up our pets and take them to a Santa Paws event to have their photo taken but you have to know that it can stress your pet out. I took my kitten and he was so limp, I told him what was going on and he took a great picture, plus he had treats after so ease your animals stress with treats and love.

Next year I will have more to this topic but with the holidays and such, things are a little crazy but I will keep the blog updated and add more hints and tips as time goes on. Keep an eye out for my tips for Christmas next year!

There are two different people in this world: humans and animals. You probably laugh at this idea, after all humans are much more different than animals and can’t be called in the least bit a person. Do they not have feelings? Do they not whimper when you turn your back on them? Do they not bleed? Alright, the last one was kind of creepy but I’m just trying to get a point across that we are so much alike. Just because most animals are furry and walk on all fours doesn’t make them any less than a ‘person.’

This is my very first post and I can’t count the number of times that I’ve went back and edited just this starting post but I want hit the people who come to say cruel things about animals right off the bat. I once thought “yeah, animal haters won’t reply to anything animal-related because they hate them” but reading through comments about Chopper the rabbit [which I assume most people heard about] I was very wrong. I don’t want to give the wrong impression right now so, I’m going to leave this story alone for now but sooner or later, I plan to open that can of worms. So, that is the reason why I started off with that statement above.

Anyway, I want to welcome everyone that is reading this to Animals That Need Us and I hope that this blog will make an impact on people and hopefully even give some tips and handmade treat ideas to loving pet parents. Tips, animals in need alerts, stories, pet obituaries and more is what I plan for in the upcoming posts.

Since I’m new to this, I’ll probably need some help but I have a lot of ideas, stories and other things that need and should be shared with everyone out there. I’m working the details out for the blog still and will update the ‘about’ page and posts often.

I would love to hear your pet stories, adoption stories, ideas, ect. so send me an email! I’ll be looking forward to it!
